Garage Sale

Each year (twice a year) our entire neighborhood puts on a garage sale.  It is organized and advertised for by our home owners association.  In fact, we are not allowed to host a garage sale on our own during the year - we have to utilized the neighborhood sales or nothing.

Anyway, today was the day.  Rather than actually attempt to sell stuff for money, our goal was to utilize the free advertising (and all the shopping traffic) to see how much of our junk people would come and haul away.  Free, just take it away.  Well, we did try and sell a few things, but most of it was free.

Overall it went well. We managed to get rid of some book shelves and a few other odds and ends we otherwise would have junked.  Clothing and stuff we can give to good-will.  But electronics (most of which no longer work), old vacuums, and random furniture items are not accepted by most charities.  But at a garage sale you can sell or give away most stuff pretty easily.

Now, what we did fail to get rid of was toys.  Sure we unloaded some of them, but we still have far more than we sold/gave away.  And it didn't help that Tanner and Cailyn kept sneaking over to the toy bins and "rescuing" items they suddenly recall as being their favorite toy(s) ever.  In one case when I tried to stop Tanner he held up one of the toy and said, "But Dad, this was the toy you got for me when we went to the arcade together!".  I was pretty surprised he even remembered that...and well, he got to keep the toy.

Tomorrow it will be on the floor, or on the stairs, or some other place it shouldn't be.   Oh well, maybe the next garage sale....
